As long as your threat model assumes all attackers are outside that perimeter, and you do a good job with the perimeter, then you're good to go. There's nowhere else for the attacker to stand to 'get around' it. In that scenario you've limited access entirely to something that can be 2FA controlled.

I came back to add for completeness, that it's different in Kenny8416's configuration where the only ingress to the network is a bastion and you lock it down so you have to RDP to it. (Putting secondary credentials into Edge is problematic, and Chrome does a weird thing which makes it harder to use here, but I'm getting out of scope for a simple reply post!)

You can use smart cards (Make sure you rotate your underlying password hash frequently!), AuthLite Opens a new window (which I like because I work on it), or a competent vault-based solution such as cyber ark where it rotates the password after use.īringing it back to the OP question, if you are using AuthLite then when you log in to the desktop as the admin, and open WAC in Edge, the 2FA creds from the desktop should just pass through to it. IMO the better approach is to protect the account itself so it simply cannot authenticate at all without the MFA.

Then you can use psexec or powershell enter-pssession to the DC, and boom you are in. For example if the systems are protected with Duo, just bring a different machine or find somewhere to stand, anywhere you can open a powershell or command prompt. If your user can inherently authenticate to the domain with just a password, then even if you put up some 2FA barriers on certain applications, an attacker could simply select one of the apps or protocols that does *not* require 2FA.

It's another flavor of the issue Jeff-J had with Duo, and 'fail closed' doesn't help that much. They could just open dsa.mmc or manipulate the LDAP objects with ADSI or directly. I suggest that securing WAC itself isn't all that useful for attack prevention, because an attacker is not obligated to use that web interface.
